The Church has been always PDF  | Print |  E-mail
The Church has been always opened to the signs of the times. The dawn of the new age - The Computer Era - glows before the us with the promise of new and improved ways of thinking, living and working. Our life is being changed by these new communication and information means and also our approximation to reality is changing. The amount of information in the world is said to be doubling every six to seven years. The only way to keep up with these increased amounts of data and information is to understand how computers work and the ability to control them for a particular purpose. But for the Church, this reflections go beyond. She has to think and discern in which ways this new technologies could be useful or harmful for the humanity. Should we accept every new discovering or innovation? Should we accept all the information we receive? Is the Internet good by itself or its goodness depends of the way we use it?

A computer can be simply defined as an electronic data processing device, capable of accepting data, applying a prescribed set of instructions to the data, and displaying in some manner or form. Any configuration of the devices that are interconnected and are programmed to operate as a computer system. The computer is said to have literally revolutionized the way one person does his job or a whole multinational organization operates their businesses. Together with this reason and many more, computers are considered more than just an essential piece of fancy equipment. Through the computer millions of persons from different and far away places can be joined in virtual conferences and chats. Every single business or enterprise has one, and everybody invokes computers in every day lives when they make a bank withdrawal, buy groceries at the supermarket and even when they drive a car.

Before this reality and facts, as Catholics sons and daughters of the Church, we must have a deep and important presence in this new cultural arena. The New Evangelization depends more and more on our commitment and presence in the Internet and in the computer’s world. Jesus said “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. Well, the Internet is an important mean to do this and we must know it and use it perfectly.
